EHRs are Truly Magic – Just ask Harry Potter (and Mostashari)

What do EHRs, Meaningful Use and Harry Potter all have in common?  Magic?  Farzad Mostashari, M.D., seems to think so. The national health IT coordinator conjured up visions of the well-known wizard a couple of weeks ago during the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) CIO Forum in Indian Wells, Calif. While explaining how Meaningful Use is meant to incite improvements in quality of care, Mostashari gave an example of how electronic health records are like magic compared to the often inefficient paper charts.  He asked the crowd of healthcare chief information officers to imagine opening a folder in which the paper would come alive for part of the patient’s life: 

 “What if a doctor could conjure up a magical spell and have all the charts of patients with diabetes fly off the shelves, opening to the pages that would show whether or not each person got the recommended care?”
