Independent Medical Practices: What does the Future Hold?

Posted by Jennifer McDuffee on Fri, Jul 19, 2013 @ 03:46 PM

It’s no secret that independent medical practice owners are struggling more than ever before with the business aspect of running their practices, and trends show that more and more physicians are thus opting for the greater financial security and administrative simplicity of employment with hospital systems, insurance companies or larger multi-specialty groups. For those who are hanging on to the autonomy of independent practice, what will the future look like?

Recent studies from the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), Accenture and Merritt Hawkins have highlighted the decrease in independent medical practices and corresponding increase in the number of physicians that are employed with healthcare systems. Administrative headaches and costs for practice owners, declining reimbursement, increased regulatory requirements and pressures from a new emphasis on accountable care are all factoring into this trend. What’s more, doctors are frustrated as they work the same number of hours, but for less money as a higher percentage of their time goes to administration or uncompensated care – up to $25,000/year for a majority of physicians, according to 2012 research from the Physicians Foundation.

Diversity in Health Information Technology

Posted by Stephen Armstrong on Thu, May 16, 2013 @ 09:30 AM

Diversity in health information technology (HIT) often gets a bad name. In the electronic
health record (EHR) space, it comes up in the context of too many vendors, too many solutions, too many versions, too many silos, too much work to figure it all out. While certainly the metrics are what they are and there is no disputing the plethora of EMRs in the market, but how many are truly different?

The Quest for the Perfect EMR

Posted by Patrick Stevenson on Tue, Apr 23, 2013 @ 04:19 PM

At Hello Health we invest a large amount of time speaking with primary care doctors about their plans for implementing an electronic medical record (EMR) and what they are looking for in a system. This valuable feedback helps us tailor the Hello Health platform to exceed the expectations of our customers. Most physicians are looking for the “perfect EMR”. The search can be frustrating when there really can’t be a perfect EMR for everyone and nearly every EMR comes with a significant price tag.

Physicians need to put a stronger emphasis on finding the right EMR for their practice. It should cover the needs of the office, their daily work and their interactions with patients. After they find the system, or the few systems that fit their needs, the next step is to narrow down their options based on price and costs associated with the EMR.

Accountable Care Organizations: What do they mean for the small independent medical practice?

Posted by Jennifer McDuffee on Thu, Mar 14, 2013 @ 03:46 PM

Health care reform and healthcare economics are prompting the creation of accountable care organizations (ACOs) and other systems that promote value-based, rather than volume-based care.  The government defines an ACO as a group of providers of healthcare services and suppliers who are accountable for the quality, cost and overall care of a population of patients. Participants coordinate care across the continuum and share both the payment and responsibility for the quality of care provided.

Hello Health Welcomes Barry Holleman

Posted by Cassi Villanueva on Thu, Feb 14, 2013 @ 01:31 PM

It’s a big year for the three-letter acronym referred to fondly by medical professionals all over the country as the EHR.  Predicted by the Annals of Family Medicine to be adopted by more than 80 percent of family physicians this year, the electronic health record is hailed as a modern-day solution to the rising medical costs and administrative setbacks often witnessed in healthcare.  From the government urging doctors to adopt the EHR to achieve meaningful use to the vendors eagerly imploring physicians to test drive their products, the EHR may be snagging a float alongside the infamous turkey in the Macy’s parade next Thanksgiving.

With the ultimate goal of empowering the independent physician to thrive in the sea of modern healthcare, Hello Health is pleased to announce the appointment of Barry Holleman to chief operating officer (COO) and vice president of the company.  Holleman joined the team last October due to his desire to help provide primary care physicians with unsurpassed multi-layered tools that deliver agile and accessible information to manage primary care interactions.

As the Hello Health team works increasingly with integrative medicine practices, it strikes me how many observers of electronic health records in ambulatory care neglect to consider the fit with this important and growing segment.
