Investing in Electronic Health Records? Think Meta-ROI.

The traditional way of thinking about your technology Return on Investment (ROI) is in strictly financial terms: Take the cost of a technology investment and attempt to quantify the financial benefits as a percentage of the cost. Match the cost and you’ve broken even. Generate a financial return greater than the cost and you’re dollars ahead.

But let’s face it. Much of the time, the costs included in a ROI don’t fully reflect the total cost of ownership: the initial purchase cost, training, implementation, support, upgrades, and maintaining regulatory compliance—to name just a few.

Patient Engagement For All The Right Reasons

Jessie Gruman, President of the Center for Advancing Health made an interesting comment in her keynote at the Connecting Healthcare + Social Media Conference last week. She noted that healthcare tends to be a last resort for patients, and by the time a patient does reach out to a provider, she wants specific, not general information. Her organization’s focus is to increase people’s engagement and involvement in their care, so she knows of what she speaks.

Reflections from the Road

John Steinbeck has always been one of my favorite authors. I think I've read almost everything he ever wrote, including Travels with Charley. Over these past few weeks I couldn't help but think of Mr. Steinbeck and his travels around the USA with his dog Charley. I have also traveled much of late, although without a trusty dog at my side, and so I thought I'd take a moment to reflect on some of the conversations I had along the way.
