The Affordable Care Act – On the Doorstep of Open Enrollment

October 1, 2014 is a historic date in the history of health care in our nation. Open enrollment will commence under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). And whether you support or contest the vision or the execution of this law, it is hard to deny the impact it will have. Today’s primary care practices are on the front lines of this new environment.

In a survey by Deloitte’s Center for Health Solutions, 32 percent of surveyed primary care physicians considered it a step in the wrong direction. For both provider and patient, there is much to be educated about and many are still unaware of the details.

Accountable Care Organizations: What do they mean for the small independent medical practice?

Health care reform and healthcare economics are prompting the creation of accountable care organizations (ACOs) and other systems that promote value-based, rather than volume-based care.  The government defines an ACO as a group of providers of healthcare services and suppliers who are accountable for the quality, cost and overall care of a population of patients. Participants coordinate care across the continuum and share both the payment and responsibility for the quality of care provided.

Meaningful Practice, not just Meaningful Use

For a couple of years now, the primary care sector has been particularly focused on Meaningful Use. I recently posted about the impact of the Supreme Court decision on the ACA, and how John Loonsk, M.D. of CGI General commented that we need to look beyond the narrow view of EHRs optimized for Meaningful Use incentives to consider the broader opportunities for technology to transform the experience of care.

The Affordable Care Act and your EHR

Last week’s landmark decision from the Supreme Court clears the way for full implementation of the 906-page healthcare reform law. Know anyone that read it from cover to cover? I didn’t think so. No worries - basically, the law establishes insurance exchanges in each state, prohibits insurance companies from discriminating against the sick, and requires nearly all Americans to prove that they carry health insurance starting in 2014.
